Generated code can pass superficial review while being wrong under concurrency, scale, edge cases, or unclear requirements.

Security risk

Technical debt

Cheap code can increase duplication, churn, dead paths, and inconsistent abstractions unless architectural ownership remains strong.

Governance practices

  • Define allowed data: rules for source code, customer data, logs, credentials, private docs, and vendor retention.
  • Require checks: tests, type checks, linting, SAST/SCA, code owners, and production monitoring.
  • Mark AI-authored sensitive changes: migrations, auth, crypto, payments, privacy, safety, and infrastructure deserve extra review.
  • Protect the junior pipeline: require explanations, pair review, and post-change learning so AI use develops talent rather than hiding gaps.
  • Measure outcomes: throughput, quality, security, stability, reviewer load, incident rate, and developer experience.
Adoption warning: “AI generated it” is not a quality claim. The accountable unit remains the engineering team.
